QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Forty-eight credit hours post-secondary, Local Formal Assessment (may be obtained pending hire) or Para certification
  2. Initiative to be a self-starter, flexible, and solution-focused. 
  3. Intuitive to the needs of the student
  4. Ability to work well with the classroom teachers, support staff, administrators, GWAEA, and parents of students as part of an educational team. 
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal  

JOB GOALS: to assist teachers in the instruction, supervision, and care of students with disabilities in a variety of instructional settings, including special education, general education, and work/community settings in order to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:  Any or all of the following duties may apply to a specific paraeducator position, depending on the needs of the student and the operation of the educational setting.

  1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  2. Maintain confidentiality.
  3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  4. Assist all educational providers with instructional activities.
  5. Respond to and implement directives from various student team members, including the principal, general education teachers, and other colleagues. 
  6. When needed, implement the student’s individual behavior plan.
  7. Maintain as requested student documentation, Medicaid logs, and progress monitoring.
  8. Assist in the implementation of students' Individual Education Plans and support in the preparation and organization of instructional materials and equipment.  
  9. Assist with and/or perform personal care and hygiene activities as necessitated by the needs of the student. 
  10. Support in the transition of students on and off the bus, as well as when needed riding the bus to support students based on student needs.  All personnel supporting students with individual educational plans should anticipate supporting in occasional and up to consistent bus riding and must complete bus rider training (to be provided upon hire).  
  11. Other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary and calendar year are to be evaluated in accordance with the Negotiated Agreement between the Iowa City Education Association and the Iowa City Community School District.  

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the District’s policy on Evaluation, State Statute, and any applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
